The emergence of a new model for teacher professional development is the result of combining the application of advanced principles for teacher professional development and collaborative technologies. Using the Developmental Work Research (DWR) methodology (Engeström, 1987, 1995), this study explains how technology has been critical for volunteer teachers from two different teacher communities to act as design partners of classroom-based networked learning/knowledge building communities. We will demonstrate how technology has enabled 1) university-school partnerships, 2) classroom-based cooperative/collaborative activities, and teachers’ and students’ participation in online collaborative learning/knowledge building spaces.
