Getting to Useful: Developing a Way to Evaluate Perceptions Around Data Use

Sun, April 6, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Talk about data-driven practice has become ubiquitous in schooling dialogues, and with the pending reauthorization of NCLB, educators in the United States should only expect greater calls for formalized data use. Yet the field lacks data collection tools that would allow district leaders and policymakers to evaluate many issues related to data-informed practice (e.g., professional learning or anxiety around data) in a timely manner. This paper outlines the process used in the development, improvement, and testing of one such instrument (the Survey of Data Use & Professional Learning) that program evaluators, district leaders and researchers can put into use to examine several issues related to data use. The full S-DUPL is provided as an appendix.
