The purpose of this research was to determine what learning environments and instructional
strategies contribute to African American male success in mathematics classrooms. A mixed-methods research design was utilized. The research findings indicated: a gap between teacher and student perception of expectations; African American male students indicated they would like to participate in more group activities; and some students feel they are not treated with respect and teachers do not care for them.
