Teacher Educator Attitudes Toward Family Engagement in Hawaii and Their Influence on Teacher Preparation

Fri, April 4, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, Franklin 13

Abstract

This paper examines teacher educator’s beliefs about family engagement (FE) in Hawaii as a first step towards understanding current shortcomings of FE offerings in teacher preparation. We conducted qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with teacher educators from the largest teacher education program in Hawaii. Our findings indicate the importance of context in terms of teacher educators views in that they focus on issues of multiculturalism, availability of highly contextualized teacher training materials, and teacher educator interest in learning more about FE in Hawaii.
