Abstract

The Berkeley Review of Education (BRE) is an open-access, peer-reviewed, student-run journal of the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Berkeley. The BRE publishes work by senior or emerging scholars, practitioners, and policy-makers that address issues of educational diversity and equity from various intra/interdisciplinary perspectives. We strive to publish cutting edge scholarship on pressing educational issues that analyze and problematize existing structures and help us imagine something new.

In this presentation, the BRE editorial team shares how we have developed the capacity of the editorial board to meet our twin goals of producing a high quality end product and nurturing a vibrant and sustainable intellectual community among ourselves. Running and sustaining a student-run journal is an incredible amount of work for all those involved, and we inquire here how to do so responsibly for graduate students. How do we make the process as meaningful as the product? How do we build in lasting structures that work with, and not against, the constant churn of editors – the quintessential feature of student-run journals? We will share our annual strategic planning process in which we reflect on our mission and set our short-term goals, our meeting and committee structures that provide opportunities for shared leadership and responsibility for meeting our goals, and our training and mentorship systems for developing skilled editors and managers. We will end with reflections on our current challenges and where we hope to grow and strengthen the journal in the future.
