The Linguistically Diverse Pedagogical Content Knowledge Mathematics and Science Observation Tool was developed by mathematics, science, and ESL education faculty for a five-year federally funded partnership between higher education institution and four elementary schools with a high number of English Language Learners. The tool is used to review instructional practices for ELs in K-5 science and mathematics lessons. There are six instrument domains: (1) classroom context/environment, (2) pedagogy: learning goals, instructional strategies, and assessment, (3) language, (4) discourse, (5) content and curriculum knowledge in mathematics and science, and (6) student thinking. Inter-rater reliabilities demonstrate six of these seven domains are close to acceptable Kappa Coefficients (0.70) with most of the percent agreements of the domains within the acceptable reliability range.
