Faced with achievement disparities, researchers have conducted studies surrounding the influence of school organization and leadership on school effectiveness. To specifically explore the impact of these elements on science achievement, we are conducting a multi-year, mixed methods investigation in metropolitan schools. Using social capital as a theoretical lens, we developed a 64-item survey containing nine distinct factors to assess K-8 teacher views of school organization and leadership in science. Results from state tests were then used to explore relationships between survey responses and student outcomes. Findings indicate some of these factors had significant correlations to science achievement after accounting for schoolwide reading performance. This study deepens the field’s understandings about the interplay among school organizations, leadership influence and student achievement.
