Family Contexts Supporting Young Deaf Children’s Early Reading

Abstract

The study focuses on describing and developing an understanding of families’ experiences reading with their young deaf children and patterns in these families’ environmental contexts that may support their young deaf children’s early reading. Using a multicase study design using parent and teacher interviews along with other data sources, the study focused on the development of individual case histories and the development of assertions through the analysis of patterns in these families’ descriptions of their experiences reading with their deaf child and their teaches’ observations of children’s reading at school. Each of the eight assertions addresses a piece of the larger environmental contexts in which young deaf children’s reading may be supported.
