This paper aims to provide an overview of the role of web 2.0 technologies in higher education, specifically among pre-service teachers. A cross-sectional survey has been conducted among pre-service teachers (N=331), which showed a specific pattern in their daily use of web-based technologies. The results showed that the extent of use vary among the respondents and the tools they utilize for leisure purposes are similarly utilized for their activities in higher education context, which confirms the claimed ubiquitous influence of technologies. However, the respondents’ assessment of the usefulness and significance of these tools also imply that although they regard the practical uses of the tools for their academic activities, they do not consider them necessary for learning.
