Build My Own Game for My Students? Practicing Teachers’ Experience of Digital Game Design

Sat, April 5, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

This research explores practicing teachers’ experiences with game design and development. Specifically, it examines the design considerations teachers taken during the game design process, and the possible differences in the teachers’ design intentions and their built games. Employing a naturalistic, case study approach, thirty-two practicing teachers participated in the study. Data included teacher written work and the digital games they created. The results show that five themes are key to teacher design considerations. In general, the teachers’ design intentions are better presented in their written design document than in the digital game. However, four categories have transferred well and even better in the digital games than in the design documents. Further discussion and implication are included.
