Transformative Learning as Cultural Capital: Native American College Students Discover Personal Values Through Educational Journeys

Abstract

This study captured transformational learning experiences from nine Native American college students using a case study design and semi-structured interviews. These experiences were found to increase students’ understanding of the role and purpose of education in their development of personal values. When students engage in transformational learning as cultural capital, they create opportunities for reaching more authentic purposes, values, feelings, and meanings about the world. Four main themes were identified: (1) Interaction with authority, (2) Moments of dissonance and challenge, (3) Self-declaration and opportunities to “give back” and (4) Reflection, visualization, and projection for the future. Having a control of transformative capital matured and strengthened as students gained these experiences along their educational journey and merged with their personal values.
