Practices Administrators Use in Rural South Texas for Hiring Highly Qualified Teachers

Sun, April 6, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

According to Balter and Duncombe (2006) there has been little research conducted recently on the recruiting, selecting, and hiring practices of teachers even though the focus on teacher quality has intensified. Additionally, although the focus on hiring practices in rural schools has increased, there has been little research on how the challenges and values of rural communities affect the hiring practices used by administrators (Little & Miller, 2006). The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover practices used in South Texas rural districts when recruiting and hiring teachers that improve the probability of recruiting and hiring highly qualified teachers in this region.
