In 2011 our research team used LISREL to model statistical Paths to Higher Order Understanding using NAEP 2008 Arts Restricted Data in the visual arts. The 2008 NAEP Arts was administered to a nationally representative sample of 2004 eighth graders. A decision was made by the Governing Board to slightly amend the 1997 arts framework, and test booklets subsequently included five of the assessment blocks used in 1997 assessment. NAEP Reading in the same interval included blocks of questions that sought to document reasoning skills and working knowledge of societal expectations in aesthetic and ethical matters. This paper explores the theoretical and statistical conjunction of achievement paths for verbal and image based literacy as revealed by NAEP.
