The Effectiveness of Thematic-Clustering Rehearsing Activity and Narrow Reading on Vocabulary Retention With English-as-a-Foreign-Language Learners in Taiwan

Abstract

The study aimed on examining the effectiveness of thematic-clustering activity along with thematic narrow readings on EFL learners' TOEIC vocabulary retention. The quasi-experimental design was adopted in the research to study the different performance between an experimental group and a control group. Both group equally participated in classroom exercises and discussions for the same thematic readings; however, the thematic-clustering activity which involved 5 wh-elicitors was implemented in the experimental group only. SPSS t-tests were used to analyze the performance of participants' vocabulary knowledge before, right after, and one week after the experiment. The results show that the thematic-clustering rehearsing activity significantly helps participants to recall and retain words.
