Faculty Development in the Health Professions: Challenges and Opportunities

Abstract

The scope and practice of faculty development in the health professions has increased significantly over the last 10 years. Most medical schools and health professions organizations now offer a variety of faculty development programs and activities designed to improve teaching effectiveness. However, an emphasis on leadership and scholarship is also becoming more prevalent. The goal of this presentation is to highlight common approaches to faculty development in the health professions, moving from workshops to the workplace; portray the current ‘state of the art’, by summarizing the results of two systematic reviews of faculty development in the health professions (on teaching and on leadership); and identify future direction for research and scholarship. The large group discussion, following this and the other presentations, will allow us to compare and contrast approaches and findings across different professional groups and identify the role of context and culture in faculty development practice and research.
