The Intersections of Stress, Satisfaction, and Organizational Culture: Understanding Faculty’s Turnover Intentions

Sat, April 5, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Marriott, Floor: Fourth Level, 408

Abstract

College faculty are becoming more mobile and less committed to their home institution. Increased scrutiny of faculty productivity and effectiveness have significantly amplified pressures on faculty workload, compounded faculty stress, and decreased faculty’s satisfaction. In turn, increased stress and reduced workplace satisfaction correspond with significantly higher probabilities of intending to leave the institution. The present study draws on data from a national survey of faculty to examine the individual experiences and institutional contexts that influence faculty’s intentions to remain at their current institution versus leave for a job outside of academe or pursue an academic position at another college or university.
