In the pursuit of cultural futures (Michaels, 1994), how might digital game environments best be designed to encourage learners to look to history as an area of interest, curiosity, and opportunity for investigation? In this mixed method design-based research study, a prototype of a mobile geolocative Augmented Reality Game to teach modern Jewish history to 5th-7th graders is iterated toward these design goals. This situated documentary game has been built and iterated drawing on research in history education, Games for Learning, Jewish education, Placed-based Learning, and mLearning. Triangulated data from multiple methods is focused on iterative game development. Design perspectives and design narrative are presented here, including results: design principles and implications for emerging mobile technology platforms.
