Lessons From an Urban School Readiness Initiative: Including Family, Friend, and Neighbor Care Providers

Sun, April 6, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, 204C

Abstract

Because so many young children are cared for in family, friend, and neighbor care (FFNC) prior to school entry, FFNC providers play a critical role in supporting the healthy development and school readiness of large numbers of young children. Using qualitative case study methods, this study examined one urban school readiness initiative’s efforts to identify and engage FFNC providers to promote school readiness in underserved communities with high rates of child poverty. Interviews and focus groups were conducted with 23 FFNC providers, 14 parent leaders, and directors and advisory board members of participating community organizations. Results highlight strategies and barriers to engaging FFNC, as well as how engagement resulted in changes in FFNC caregiving and school readiness practices.
