As we prepare a new generation of educators to teach diverse and growing classrooms, it is important to understand their attitudes towards students of color. Through an analysis of qualitative data, we revisit the notion of “equity traps” and pre-service teachers’ propensity to fall victim to them. Our research shows that long-established attitudes like deficit view and racial erasure are alive in a new generation of educators. We consider the implications of these traps and suggest ways to avoid them.
