Libraries in California community colleges have begun to experiment with social media, chat reference, and text messaging as methods of outreach and education to community college students. This study describes how community college libraries in California are using social media and emerging communication technologies to interact with students. Community college librarian perceptions about the efficacy of using social media and emerging communication technologies, and barriers to the implementation of new technologies are also explored in this study. The mixed methods study combined quantitative and qualitative data gathered from library websites, library social media posts, and a survey of library leaders in California community college libraries.
