This study explored parents’ experiences in supporting their preschool and elementary-aged children’s reading development while participating in a book-reading workshop at a transitional home. The parents in this workshop were homeless during the time of the program and were taught mainstream reading practices—those practices shown to foster reading success in school. This session describes parents' experiences specifically in regard to school-related, social, and economic power influences that affected parents' self-efficacy in supporting their children as developing readers.
