Against Sedentary Education: A Narrative Inquiry Into the Role of Body and Physical Education

Abstract

Physical education is increasingly marginalized, which begs the need to critically look at what it means to be physically educated as well as what role physical education can play in teaching and learning. This proposal is a narrative inquiry into an insight into physical education, which explores the relationship between body, embodiment, and physical education. Drawing upon a theory of embodiment, we discuss the current status of physical education in the US school system and then theorize the role of body and embodiment in education to understand what it means to be physically educated. In doing so, we intend to raise the educator’s awareness of the importance of physical education in fostering a child as the whole embodied being.
