Young people aged 16 – 25 living in or near a National Park in the southwest of England were the focus of our study to explore their social and economic aspirations and the influences that shaped these. A mixed methods approach was used to elicit views and practices regarding their educational and vocational pathways. Although many young people experienced serious challenges in terms of access to education and jobs, this was not wholly negative as they also alluded to powerful complex motivations to stay in the area. Rather than pursue material wealth, many sought alternative riches in terms of community and embodied nature through their everyday activities.
