Teaching Tolerance Within the Protective Walls of the Public School: A Civic Aim of Education in Pluralist Democracies

Fri, April 4, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

In this paper, we make a case for a nuanced approach to dealing with the challenges presented by religious orthodoxy to the civic mission of pluralist public schools. This approach provides social studies teachers, scholars, and others a new way of conceptualizing tolerance that is more attainable for the pluralist classroom and may lead to a greater realization of the aims of citizenship education.
