Spatial Analysis as Social Justice Research: Addressing Racial Realism in U.S. Schools

Thu, April 3, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

This paper discusses using racial spaces analysis to help educational research on race better address the racial realism evident in US Schools. After explaining the concept of racial realism based on the work of Derrick Bell (1992, 2008), it discusses racial spaces analysis, drawing heavily on the work of Calmore (1993, 1995) and Soja (2010). It shares two of the author's efforts at using racial spaces analysis: one an elementary school professional development project and the other with a community group whose focus is to counteract how the school to prison pipeline functions in a local school district.
