Abstract

Empirical large-scale assessments of the last forty years showed that economic, cul-tural and social capital has substantial impact on students’ academic achievement. In recent years a wide variety of instruments have been developed to measure the extent of students’ disparities accounting for classical cultural resources. Based on data from 37 countries of TIMSS 2011, the proposed paper extends this approach by integrating new technologies. The paper develops an index comprising the access to and posses-sion of information and communication technologies (ICT) as cultural capital in the 21st century. The presented research constructs a corresponding Home Digital Re-sources (HDR) scale, and evaluates its impact on the use of computers at home. Using IRT technology, calibration is conducted via weighted likelihood estimation.
