Beyond Initial Transition: An International Examination of the Complex Work of Experienced Literacy/English Teacher Educators

Abstract

This article reports on a study of 21 mid-career and senior literacy/English teacher educators in four countries: Canada, UK, US, and Australia. They showed that although these teacher educators had moved beyond the struggles of beginning teacher educators, they still felt like a fraud because they had moved beyond identifying with and as a classroom teacher. They still felt there was a hierarchy in their departments. They must continue to expand their knowledge of a number of areas: literacy, government initiatives, and current curriculum documents. However, they see their on-going growth as a strength not a short-coming. By mid-career there is a synergy between their research, teaching, and service.
