The Pedagogical Coordinator as Policy Mediator: Challenges due to New Policies in the Public School System in Brazil

Abstract

In Brazil, since the 1990’s in the team of management professionals of primary and high schools, the pedagogical coordinator has been considered the main agent with the objective of keeping the teachers committed with the fulfillment of performance goals established by external indicators. Our questions are: 1) What is the role of the school pedagogical coordinator as mediator between the implemented curriculum policies and basic school teachers in a quality seeking school? 2) How teachers reacted to changes in curriculum and assessment conducted by the authorities now in power at the Education Department of the city of Rio de Janeiro?
