Using Multiple Measures to Identify the Experiences That Initiate and Maintain Interest in STEM

Abstract

Protocols and surveys developed using iterative design will be presented. These focus on the nature and timing of experiences that generate and sustain interest for STEM for third graders through college students and their faculty members. Our items are drawn from national and international surveys, and those of other researchers. Iteration allows for continued development of the survey based on data trends, but it also inhibits comparison across samples with substantial variation from a single instrument. Our approach to measurement is providing new information regarding interest in STEM; we are working to refine our instruments by vetting them across contexts.
