Early literacy skills acquired before young children enter formal school settings are highly predictive of later academic achievement. Early literacy skills include code- and meaning-focused skills, both of which are essential for preparation for formal reading instruction. As children enter preschool having experienced diverse literacy experiences, preschool classrooms have a key role in providing opportunities that support their development. This presentation will examine the effects of an early literacy curriculum that embeds code-focused skills instruction in book reading on the early literacy skills of at-risk preschoolers. Implications for early childhood education practice, policy, and teacher professional development will be discussed.
