Involving Students of Teaching in Learning Research as a Pedagogy for Developing Professional Practice

Abstract

Teacher preparation is the subject of controversy and debate. Much of the controversy reflects differing conceptions of teaching. Where some view teaching as a technical enterprise and call for preparation programs to put emphasis on the acquisition of instructional strategies, others view teaching as a professional field of study and call for “developing a pedagogy of teacher preparation” (Loughran, 2006) that reflects the attitudes, knowledge and skills of teaching itself. In this paper I advance involving students of teaching as learning researchers and critical exploration methodology (Duckworth, 2005) as a pedagogy which develops the disposition, knowledge and skills of professional practice. The pedagogy is an application of developmental theory and methodology in the field of education.
