Resilience: Believing in Students and Their Strengths for Success in Schools

Fri, April 4, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

Resilience research focuses on healthy development and successful learning, especially among youth facing challenges. A reoccurring message in resilience research posits the relationship that beliefs have with resilience: resilience begins with beliefs. In schools, teachers’ beliefs influence classroom practices and students’ success. This paper highlights a participatory action research study that provided the foundation for a new book on resilience published by Teachers College Press. The book explores the relationship between resilience and beliefs, posits a conceptual framework that can be used for both preservice and professional development experiences for educators and administrators to influence their beliefs about student resilience in an effort to enhance student success, and provides suggestions, strategies, and support for transferring such research into practice.
