The Experiences of Philosophy Doctoral Students: A Possible Red Herring?

Sun, April 6, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrrace Level, Terrace III

Abstract

The conventions of the discipline are crucial aspects upon which to examine doctoral study (Golde, 2005). This study explored the experiences of doctoral students in a research-intensive university in the department of Philosophy through a socialization framework. This study utilized a case study methodological approach which included data collection through websites, departmental observations, and semi-structured interviews with faculty members, administrative personnel, and doctoral students. Findings indicated that departmental and disciplinary norms operated in ways that revealed specific notions of success in doctoral study, and results suggested a nuanced understanding to conventional conceptions of how monetary resources operate in humanities disciplines.
