Coming to America: Perspectives of an English Language Learner Student Navigating an American High School

Mon, April 7, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: Terrrace Level, Terrace III

Abstract

Research shows rising disparities of graduation rates for English Language Learner (ELL) students as increasingly difficult expectations place unique strains on both ELL students and educators. Power can be diminished as ELL students navigate an unfamiliar school system, calling for innovative strategies. The purpose of this study is to explore the perspectives of a former ELL student and his former school counselor regarding their academic and cross-cultural experiences during the student’s years in a public high school. Using qualitative research methods, data was collected through observations and interviews. Findings indicate themes regarding use of interpreters, informal cross-cultural behaviors, formal school policies, and circumnavigation of rules. This study can be significant to further dialogue regarding innovative strategies to assist ELL students.
