Lift Every Voice: A Critical Race Analysis of African American Students at Predominately White Institutions of Higher Education

Abstract

As student populations at institutions of higher education across the United States are becoming increasingly diverse, it is essential to include in educational conversations critical examinations into the lived realities of these students. This paper presentation will focus on the experiences of African American students at predominately white institutions of higher education (Harper, 2013; Strayhorn, 2011). Specifically, the theoretical framework of critical race theory, with explicit attention placed on the tenet of counter-storytelling and narratives, will be utilized to analyze and understand the experiences of African American students at predominately white colleges and universities (Harper, 2009; Solorzano, Ceja, & Yosso, 2000).
