Fri, April 4, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrrace Level, Terrace III

Abstract

The paper reports two studies designed to educe teacher attitudes, beliefs and behaviours. Study 1 (N=750) examined attachment profiles and prevalence of anger at students and colleagues from pre-service and experienced teachers, including n=179 principals. Study 2 (N=2049) examined bullying of the principal by teachers. Pre-service teachers’ reported the highest levels of attachment insecurity, Principals the lowest. Secondary teachers were significantly more likely to bully principals than elementary teachers and reported higher prevalence of anger at colleagues and students. The implications for classroom management as a function of school cultural norms and display rules derived from teacher attitudes and beliefs are discussed.
