Abstract

Learning to Use Formative Assessment in Mathematics with the Assessment Work Sample Method (AWSM) is a development project with an iterative design-research process. It is intended to create an interactive, job-embedded professional development program that will leverage the power of formative assessment to improve teacher practice and increase student learning. AWSM builds middle school mathematics teachers’ understanding of high-quality formative assessment and their ability to use it in their classrooms. The Assessment Work Sample Method is a way to collect, create, discuss, and learn from authentic samples of formative assessment work to help teachers integrate content knowledge and formative assessment instructional practices and skills. Results from the pilot indicate that AWSM significantly improves teacher practice of formative assessment.
