This conceptual paper raises important questions surrounding advocacy of educational leaders: What is the intended purpose of advocacy and why is it important for educational leadership? This paper argues that the intended goal of advocacy is social justice. Advocacy has been engaged in educational leadership research, but the concept of advocacy remains inchoate. This paper draws from important insights from school counseling literature and models for advocacy. The purpose of this paper is to re-theorize educational leadership away from its entrepreneurial role toward a more proactive advocacy role. We provide explicit suggestions how counseling and leadership standards can inform each other to help leadership preparation programs develop leaders who are innovate advocates for educational improvement.
