Analyzing University Students’ Subject-Specific Competence in Economics and Business by Adapting Two Internationally Approved Measuring Instruments

Abstract

In Germany, cross-institutional assessment of student learning in higher education is becoming an increasingly important research area. Nevertheless, there is still no German-language instrument that meets academic requirements for assessing subject-specific competence in economics and business.
The project WiwiKom strives to remedy this research deficit by pursuing iteratively the goals of model and instrument design. A competence model is conceptualized that describes the level and development of university students’ competencies. On this basis, empirical testing is conducted using two adapted international measuring instruments. The presentation will elaborate on the theoretical and empirical derivation of the competence model and its international compatibility and will be illustrated by various empirical findings mainly from the two major paper-and-pencil surveys with altogether 7500 students.
