Mapping Perceptions: Constructing and Analyzing Concept Maps as a Means for Uncovering Teachers’ Perceptions

Abstract

This paper discusses the methodology used in a recent qualitative study which was designed in order to uncover teachers’ explicit and implicit perceptions of their role in school. The research instrument used in the study was the Concept Structuring Analysis Task (ConSAT) that allows the creation of a map on the basis of an interview with each participant. The sample consisted of 21 teachers in three educational settings which differ in their underlying educational philosophy. This paper will describe the pre-interview process in which the initial concepts for the construction of the maps were selected, as well as the multi-faceted post-interview analysis.
