Conceptualizing Second-Wave White Teacher Identity Studies: A Review of White Teacher Identity Literatures

Abstract

This synoptic text provides a review of literatures on White teacher identity signalling new trends for capacitating White teachers of diverse students. Working from the perspective of White studies and White studies in education, this synoptic text recognizes White studies’ contributions to preservice and professional teacher education. Recognizing these contributions, this synoptic text reviews existing research on teachers’ White ally//race-evasive identities predominant in teacher education and professional development. Reaching beyond race-evasive identities, this synoptic text identifies new trends in White teacher identity studies for advancing teacher education in the present. Called second-wave White teacher identity studies, new trends seek complex, critical, nuanced, and generative discussions on difference for preservice and professional teachers of diverse students.
