Exploring Critical Media Literacy in Practice: Perspectives and Practices From English-as-a-Foreign-Language Learners

Thu, April 3, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Convention Center, Floor: Terrace Level, Terrace IV

Abstract

This presentation reports on a qualitative teacher-inquiry conducted in a tertiary English-as-a-foreign-language classroom in Taiwan. The research explores students’ perspectives of and practices with critical media literacy (CML). Data for this presentation included the students’ reflection papers and their writing assignments in which they examined female representations in a TV show and a commercial. Data also included my researcher journal, in which my planning, observations, and reflections were documented. The students revealed the benefits of CML as not only viewing the media through a different lens but also promoting multiple perspectives and furthering their thinking. They also demonstrated an ability to critically engage with media texts as they examined how women were discriminated against and stereotyped in the media.
