Student Voices on the Experiences of Freshmen of Color in Urban High Schools: A Pathway to Improved Educational Opportunities

Abstract

This paper uses voices of students of color to highlight ways that urban high schools and leaders can better support freshmen of color as they transition to high school. A qualitative multiple case study analysis of four urban schools was conducted drawing on the voices of over 100 students of color through both focus groups and surveys. Results highlight the need for leaders in urban districts to involve students of color in creating equitable learning opportunities. Additional results include the need freshmen of color to have upper class mentors, school staff members who understand the experiences they are encountering, and students report no connection with administration which results in frustration and anger when administration attempts to help or support students.
