Improving Confidence in Program Evaluation Findings: A Meta-Analytical Approach

Sat, April 5, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

This study, using HLM and meta-analytical procedure, examines the effectiveness of a Music and Technology program in improving student achievement gains in reading and mathematics. Findings from the HLM analyses are contradictory (similar to findings from previous evaluation of the program). However, when findings HLM analyses were aggregated using meta-analytical procedure a clearer picture emerged. Specifically, it was found that the program was effective in improving reading achievement (as assessed by SRI). Students who participated in the program had high reading achievement gains of 0.233 SD (about 5 NCEs) relative to their non-program peers. Given the systematic procedure used in meta-analysis, stakeholders can have increased confidence in the conclusion reached in this study.
