Abstract

This study describes the relationships between Student Knowledge Links (SKLs), the degree to which their classrooms include three aspects of contemporary classrooms (reflective processes, student ownership, and multiple perspectives), and student achievement scores as indicated by national grade equivalent scores measured using the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. SKLs are student perceptions of potential elaborative or generative learning strategies called student knowledge links. Study participants included 251 fifth and sixth grade students in rural communities in a Midwestern state. Results indicated relationships among Seeking Relations, as component of SKLs and Ownership, a component of contemporary classroom environments as the most prevalent predictors of a number of the achievement outcomes such as total reading and overall composite scores.
