An Exploratory Study of Pretenure Women Faculty Voice

Mon, April 7, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Convention Center, Floor: 100 Level, 125

Abstract

This exploratory study examines factors that affect pre-tenure women faculty’s voice. Very little is known about voice and silence issues among pre-tenure women faculty members. Studies have shown that women faculty experience unique challenges that have resulted in higher levels of stress. The tenure process poses additional challenges for women faculty. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 pre-tenure women assistant professors at three public research universities and are analyzed using thematic analysis approach. Study findings will contribute to the research on women and education by exploring the experiences of pre-tenure women faculty from a new lens and can inform policies and strategies to support their success.
