The purpose of this paper is to: a) synthesize literature defining current approaches to science education, its epistemic pedagogical systems and to propose a pedagogical ‘lens’ to focus instruction—‘Community Views of Science’ (CVOS); b) situate the nature and role of science education within educational endeavour and to propose a structure for the development of CVOS through guided collective reflection and introspection; and c) empirically and theoretically interpret each interconnected element of CVOS.
A qualitative exploration of collaborative and individual concept mapping with undergraduate pre-service science educators (N=55) from a large urban university will depict that self-actualization of collective views of science can be fostered through instructional strategies embedded in an instructional system designed for the actualization of belief systems.
