Abstract

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were created to develop globally competitive scientific literacies in American students that would enable the growth of science-based industry and the economy. We used discourse and content analysis to critically evaluate through neoliberal, biocapital and human labour perspectives the NGSS potential impact on school science. Our analysis suggests the knowledge and skills inscribed in the NGSS may advance a scientific literacy that is more narrowly focused on creating a science labor force than previous national science standards, while marginalising science education for democratic participation in society. We suggest further development of the NGSS is needed to ensure that all students are receiving a science education that prepares them for democratic citizenship.
