Eastern Dreams Versus Western Realities: Unbalance Between Chinese College Preparation Programs and American Admission Decisions

Abstract

This study analyzes the journey of Chinese high school students to American universities, especially Ivy League universities. A very popular road is through participation in a college preparation programs (CPP). Despite drastic grown in CPPs, the literature is silent on the efficacy and benefits of CPPs. The proposed study will investigate the assumptions inherent to enrollment in a CPP – specifically that these expensive programs will lead to admission to an ivy-league institution. We propose investigation of the realistic admission criteria from admission officers in American colleges. The results will be beneficial for both American college admission officers and student affair professionals in higher education institutions as well as prospective Chinese students.
