Studying Reading Strategies With Rapid Serial Visual Presentation

Sat, April 5, 8:15 to 9:45am, Convention Center, Floor: 200 Level, Hall E

Abstract

Rapid serial visual presentation (RSVP) is a word by word reading paradigm that controls word display time and is useful in studying the influence of timing on reading comprehension. The current study uses a modified version of rapid serial visual presentation called moving window rapid serial visual presentation (MW-RSVP) in an attempt to relate reading strategies with working memory as well as assess the usefulness of MW-RSVP as a reading paradigm. Our data showed that inducing pauses at strategic locations in text improves free-recall across all participants but especially among readers with low working memory spans. In addition, MW-RSVP was effective as a reading paradigm as evidenced by significant effects between high- and low-working memory span groups.
